Jute Industry

Bangladesh is a major jute producing country in the world. For centuries, Bangladesh remains the key player in the global jute trade with reputation. The jute of Bangladesh is known as the ‘golden fiber’. The country is the largest exporter of raw jute and various jute products. Bangladeshi jute dominates the world market, especially the Middle East, European, Australia, USA and African countries.

In Bangladesh, manufacturers manufacture a number of products jute products: bags, sacks, shopping bags, carpet yarn, ropes, cordage, twins, padding, burlap and other miscellaneous items. Nowadays, jute fibers are used in a wide range of diversified products: decorative fabrics, footwear, fashion accessories, greeting cards etc.

The jute sector of Bangladesh is regulated by the Department of Jute which is under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute. There are several agencies of the Ministry which works for the betterment of the sector that includes, Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Bangladesh Jute Corporation (BJC) and Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC). There are a number of laws and regulations which governs the jute industry, some of these are, Jute Law 2017, Mandatory Jute Packaging Act, 2010 and Mandatory Jute Packaging Rules, 2013.
